The central body of he island under the control of the Four Clans as One – the farming Beørnings\, nomadic Augings\, seafaring Ylvings and the Refskeggings\, the traders and Kings who keep the laws\, under the watchful eyes of the Mystics – once of a clan\, now unfettered in the wake of the Gods’ will. \nIn the 22nd year of the reign of King Olaf Refskegging\, something historic happened. Peace was brokered with the Manafolk’s ancient enemy\, the Brúsingr\, once the fifth clan of their people\, led by the fifth hero who took the island and – according to the sagas – removed all of the Jotun and Trollkin from Manafell alongside Ylva\, Refskegg\, Auga and Beørn. A marriage between the King’s son Prince Thorstein and Ingrid the pragmatic daughter of King Halfdan of the Brúsingr. \nThe Jomsvikings were next – five bands of warriors led by five Jarls\, who swear oaths to no kings who cannot pay them. One\, Gríma Knothair\, was won over with piety\, another two by quiet agreements with the Manafolk. Jarls Hilda and Johan had a problem: one of their fellow Jomsviking Jarls was a troublemaker\, a nuisance\, but anything they may do to aid the succession of his much more… amenable… captain would not be looked upon well by their people. The Manafolk were able to lend a hand\, and a dagger in the dark. \nBut what of the lands to the West? The raids in the summer proved it was not merely legend. The place called North-Umbria holds many treasures – too many for them to bring home on their brief sojourn in the summer of 800AD. A plan was formed\, the ties of Manafell – the Oaths sworn – held the island\, and those with a glint in their eye sailed west. \nThere they found riches\, but also a people now steeled to attacks from the sea\, fighting back with cunning as well as brute strength. With a great steel chain spanning across the river Forth\, the Manafolk were forced to reply in kind\, using much of the Ylvings guile and wit with waterways to find the source of the chains. Kidnapping the blacksmith who forged them\, they forced her to break the great work\, and could make their way back home. \nNow the winter solstice approaches\, and Augings travelling between the Manafell settlements bring news – Elders have been going missing\, taken from their beds or places of work\, with nothing else seemingly gone. These folk have survived a year as Jarl of their people in the past\, so are not without skill their people value: strength\, fearlessness\, leadership\, wit\, cunning\, diplomacy… to say nothing of their talents with an axe\, bow or spear. \nCoupled with new reports of lights and other strange signs on the haunted isle off the Ylving coast\, it is many a person who seeks advice and charms of protection from their mystics\, fearful of wandering draugr or jealous hugr spirits dragging them to Hel’s embrace. \nAs the nights draw in\, and stories of the lights on Østaland continue\, Prince Thorstein makes plans for a new kind of raid…
