Five Cohorts marched north\, accompanying engineers – both Briton and Roman – who will appraise the route of the new Emperor’s great work. Five Cohorts marched east\, to gather the resources necessary and begin the project – all 2000 soldiers\, be they trained in trade or simply labour. \nThe XI Auxilliary Cohort of the IX\, wait. Stationed at Cilurnum\, they wait. In the last days of the Roman year\, and with the troops increasingly restless\, Tribune Lucius Saturninus declares a holiday. The Gallic Wars are over\, and Caesar marches back to Rome in Triumph with the Thirteenth Legion. \nThe Eleventh Auxiliary Cohort of the Twelfth Legion\, the Fulminata – the Thunderers – follow behind\, taking the opportunity to march closer to civilisation and all its comforts. Their barracks are provided by Agrippina Major\, the Domina of a Ludus outside Ravenna. \nIt has been a year since the breaking of the Siege of Uxellodunum\, and a prosperous year for the Twelfth Legion. Gaul has bent the knee to Rome\, and with it the breadbasket of the northern provinces. Those members of the cohort who have a way with words have been able to make a tidy profit on the side\, and those that speak with their fists have found their services in regular demand in persuading the uncooperative tribes that they have\, in fact\, lost. \nTime to look to the future\, and a few years’ relative peace after the decade of war in the north. Twenty years’ service starts to look achievable after all\, with all the benefits it comes with… citizenship\, retirement\, wealth. \n“Alea iacta est…”

Although barely a stone’s throw from the Roman Provinces of southern Gaul\, the terrain has made it impossible for the legions to simply march in and do what they do best. The Duranus river surrounds three sides\, a mountainside the fourth\, and the Legatus in command is doggedly keeping them penned in\, but rumour is he at a loss against these Gauls who seem to need for nothing inside their keep. \nThe orders from Legatus Gaius Caninius Rebilus are simple. The Eleventh will march north from Narbo and prevent reinforcements reaching the siege from other rebels in the foothills of the Pyrenees. Commandeer the fortress of Sotium and be ready for further orders. \nThe Hound of Alesia has barked\, and the Eleventh had better answer.

Without them\, Rome is in the hands of two men whose ambitions no longer align. Civil war may be on the horizon\, but for the time being politics is played with the gain of land and resources\, not Roman blood. \nNarbo; a town of little consequence to the senate\, yet at the crossroads of the Via Aquitainia and Via Domitia\, the first Roman road to cross Gaul. While nearby Marseilles receives the patronage of Pompey Magnus\, Narbo is now the home of veterans of the 10th Legion\, settled there by Julius Caesar. It is a town on the up\, or so Caesar is betting. All it needs is bread and circuses and the provincials will be cheering his name – circuses provided by a new Ludus set up by the lifelong friend of Tribune Tarquinius – Agrippina Maxima. \nA perfect place to resupply after a challenging few months on campaign in Gaul – and perhaps a perfect opportunity to raise the profile of the XIII in the eyes of Caesar. \n________________________ \nThe second (official) instalment of Legio: SPQR will be set six months after their snowy expedition to Gaul. As Legionnaires\, all players will be expected to work together to set up camp\, keep everyone fed and watered and take up whatever duties the legion requires. Simple and hearty in-character food is included in the ticket price\, and we will have a tavern operating in the town of Narbo with some provincial drinks (a keg of ale)\, and you are welcome to bring your tipple of choice to put behind the bar. \nDeath on campaign is frequent and medicine rudimentary\, but the XIII Auxiliaries are always recruiting. We do not have bead pulls or death counts in this system; we expect players to go by the rule of cool\, fight cinematically and give game to healers. Death is a massive part of the Roman world. With the smoking remains of Solo’s villa behind them\, and an uneasy truce with the two Gaullish tribes who Solo and his wife Serena had hoodwinked into his scam\, the 11th made good progress\, although the bastions of civilisation were still some weeks ahead when a messenger arrived from the Castra Treverorum\, a military camp and border post a days’ march to the East. \n  \n“Military Tribune Tarquinius\, \nPraise Minerva for the news of your arrival! I gladly accept your offer of help\, as I find myself down a century or two since General Caesar passed through to subdue the last few Treveri dogs still resisting the Republic. With the majority of my capable warriors seconded by the legions\, the skeleton crew I have here manning the border are in desperate need of respite. We will make room for your Auxiliaries and yourself\, although the commanders’ quarters are somewhat spartan and we have not yet received the shipment of feather mattresses from Ostia that General Caesar requested when he last stayed here. I am certain you will be comfortable nonetheless!\n\nSignifer Marcellus\nScribe to Praefectus Festus\nP.S. We would appreciate any stores you can spare.” \n  \nTrying desperately to remember when he could have offered to send aid to an unknown Prefect in an inconsequential border post\, Tarquinius listened as the messenger spoke and\, eyes flashing in alarm at the prospect of yet more weeks without the comforts of a good bathhouse and well-stocked villa\, he issued vague orders to divert the last dozen or so of the column to follow the messenger back to Castra Treverorum.\n\n“Try to make yourselves useful\, legionnaire” the Tribune muttered to one as she overtook his litter.
