Will you stand with them? \nAutumn 1201. The tourney at Gloucester did not end as expected. Instead of welcoming the young Lord Gilbert de Clare into the fold of the rebellion\, he instead turned the rebels in to the Sheriff of Gloucester\, leading to a frantic retreat over the border to Gwent moments after the grand melee. \nAll was not lost in failing to secure Earl Gilbert’s support\, however – the loyalties of other lords and their retainers were revealed to the rebels\, some of whom had been part of the rebellion for longer than they had been.\nChief among these was Lady Isobella of Gloucester; a cousin of Gilbert’s who had been working on turning his allegiance for some time\, and was deeply frustrated by the ham-fisted results of the exiled lieges in attendance. Her reasons for hating King John were obvious – he had recently divorced her in favour of a French Princess\, and as a favourite daughter-in-law of Queen Eleanor of Aquitaine\, Lady Isobella was in the very centre of the dowager Queen’s inner circle. With her trust\, and that of her retainers Dame Rowena and Friar Hal\, she is sure to be a key figure in helping the outlaws undermine her former husband and replace him on the throne with the heir of Richard the Lionheart. \nAccompanied by Prince Llewellyn ap Iorweth and his lover\, the Lady Joan – herself a bastard daughter of King John – the pair were wed and the Prince took all the outlaws north\, through the Welsh Marches to his Principality. Gwynedd was not their final destination however. Llewellyn’s uncles\, Princes Rhodri and Dafydd ab Owain\, had been a thorn in his side all his life. Bringing a group of notorious rebels and outlaws into the court at Bangor would only serve to put fuel on the fire of those who preferred the traditionalist uncles to Llewellyn’s more forward-thinking ways. Bringing home a wife who was an Anglo-Norman princess was bad enough! \nThinking to keep them safe\, yet close at hand\, Prince Llewellyn has cunningly organised aid from his cousin\, Sir Madog. Madog’s lands of Powys Fadog are small\, but his loyalty to his kinsman is without doubt. He has secreted the outlaws in the building works that he hopes will secure his soul in heaven; the Cistercian abbey of Valle Cruces in Llangollen\, where foundations are beginning to be laid. With the influx of pilgrims to the holy site\, as well as workers and tradesfolk of all types\, a few additional “pilgrims” will not be noticed. \nIn the last month or so of late summer\, Llewellyn has sent messages requesting aid of all those fighting fit in the abbey\, to assist him in repelling northmen raiders from the isles to the north. The remaining balance of £40 is due on the Friday of the event at Registration. \nPlease see booking details below. \nCapped at 40 players and 30 crew. \nThe Oasis 2 is a one-shot LARP set in 1934\, with players taking the roles of the cast\, crew and associated “muscle” on possibly the highest budget moving picture made to date. \nUsing the “Nightmare Rules” we’ve created and used at other EYELarp games with a high body count\, the LARP Award “Game of the Year” winning event took place\, but in THIS reality\, it was a totally normal film shoot\, with all the normal trials and tribulations that involves. \nIf you played the first Oasis event and your character died – do not worry! This is an alternate reality where they are alive and well. Feel free to roleplay elements of it as a strange dream you had after too many oysters if you wish\, but the events of the last game are not part of the narrative of this one. \nIt DIDN’T turn out that half the cast and crew were Immortal beings who had visited the mysterious island at some point in the previous 3000 years and been recruited into a family of murderous cultists. \nThe Oasis was a totally normal production\, which though going horrendously over budget\, was a smash hit at the 6th Academy Awards\, winning Outstanding Production (also called “Best Picture”)\, Best Actor in the form of Clark Daytona in the role of Sergeant Albert Jones\, and having not one but three actresses from the production shortlisted in the category of Best Actress. Lydia Keye\, Florence Montgelas and Matilda Baptiste were all beaten by Katherine Hepburn\, but rumours of an altercation at the afterparty between the four women have been circulating for months. \nMany agree it was unfair of Ms. Keye to sub-in her stunt double for the fight.\n \nDirector B.B. Nelson is keen to keep the momentum going with a new production. Some of the same cast and crew have been offered contracts to return\, others have already been picked up by other film crews in Hollywood and beyond. \nThis time\, B.B. is keen to film something new… something not seen on film since the heyday of silent film… A Western! \nHe has secured the rights to shoot in a recently reopened set in Spain\, which was closed for a decade after all productions were shut down during the Spanish coup d’etat of 1923 and following years of Military dictatorship under General Primo de Rivera. \nThe Second Spanish Republic is keen to be seen as a place of new ideas\, new technologies and new money\, and the cash injection from Summerisle Studios is very much welcomed by the fledgling socialist government. \nAll Cast\, Filmcrew and Security are travelling to Grenada to make their way to the film set deep in the hills of Sierra Nevada\, which has been a Western-style Ghost Town since a fateful night in 1923 when production suddenly stopped amidst an armed takeover…\n \n_____________________________\nIf that’s whet your appetite\, some OC information now:\nThe Oasis is inspired by movies set in and around the Golden Age of Hollywood\, such as 1933’s King Kong\, 2000’s Shadow of the Vampire and 1952’s Singin’ in the Rain\, and also pulpy classics set in the 1930s such as 1999’s The Mummy and 1981’s Raiders of the Lost Ark. \nIn the style of Flying Lead: Nightmare\, there is a high likelihood your character will not survive filming! There will be other opportunities of continuing to play the game – but dying in a suitably climactic\, cinematic way is a part of the experience!\nAs with all our games\, The Oasis is set on a fictional pocket of history to allow all potential players to have fun with the inter-war adventure aesthetic without worry of discrimination based on “historical attitudes”. Winter is over and those aligned with the rebel William Marshal have weathered a long year: exiled for voicing opinions against King John\, returning from the holy land with little to come back to or simply so poor that the life of an outlaw is no hardship\, since their meeting in Arundel their ranks have swelled a little but it is a rare fool who declares themself for Richard’s heir outright. \nSome members of the secret rebellion returned home to villages or estates that still quietly supported them\, waiting on news and the call to act. Others stayed in the environs of Arundel under the patronage of Lady Juliana\, rebuilding her manor of Middleton using the money now available to her as Lady of Arundel castle. \nGiven a suggestion by Blind Jan\, a beggar of the village\, the Hoods scouted ahead to Gloucester to keep tabs on the cousin of Isobel de Clare\, Gilbert Earl of Gloucester – a young man of uncertain loyalties. The poker tournament was won\, making one lady somewhat richer than before\, and the quick-draw competition left many hopefuls bleeding in the street\, with the last two standing resorting to knives and first blood. \nIn the meantime the Riley – or O’Riley\, depending on which of them you ask – clan was gaining boldness and blocking travel and trade in the region\, even going so far as to shoot Sheriff Carver\, until a settlement was reached to pay them a tax in exchange for peace. Not all were happy with this decision\, and more than one person resorted to firearms over it. \nWith the celebrations of Independence Day came fireworks and fun\, but also Juno Valley’s own kind of democracy\, with the Mayoral Elections swiftly approaching. Standing on a platform of justice and an end to the Riley Agreement\, Mayor Jack Carson was elected\, and by the end one of only two of the original four candidates to survive the race. Hey\, we never said Juno Valley was a safe place for politicians. \nAided by some tip-offs from the criminal underbelly of New Austen\, the Sheriff’s Office and Pinkerton Detective Agency worked together to snare Henry King and his posse in his own trap – in Sweetwater where he planned to kidnap Beulah and force her to take him back. But the Law won through\, and the gallows that were built for him were finally put to use. \n  \nThe second arc focused on the Brotherhood of the Second Coming\, a religious sect who were spreading their own brand of Religion through New Austin. \nThe new Mayor\, Jack Carson showed he wasn’t just a yes man by dealing with the Riley Clan in an onslaught that decimated the family. His “no prisoners” stance proved popular with some residents\, although there were some that said that those who live by the sword are sure to die by them too. \nWith law and order brought to the valley\, a new religious sect out of Utah found a footing nearby. The Brotherhood of the Second Coming had made themselves known\, but it had yet to be seen if the fire and brimstone they spout was true or just the frothing of zealots seeking power in this remote spit of land. \nWhile the ugly head of politics was reared amongst the law-bringing folks in clashes between Sheriff Carver’s Deputies and the Pinkerton Detective Agency\, the arts were brought into the spotlight by the Juno Valley Symposium of Arts\, who displayed several new works by up-and-coming artists of the region. \nThis new era of stability has lured fresh blood to some of the vacant lots in Goodwill\, for those who can afford to rebuild the streets and shops that were once burned to the ground by Henry King and the Kingsmen. One Fauna Fortuna – according to her handbills a well-regarded herbalist and spiritualist – opened shop next door to Jakob’s\, and was met with much excitement by those ‘sensitive’-minded locals looking for answers from the beyond. \nJuno Valley was again covered in the blood of the innocent\, the faithful and the lost. The Church of the Second Coming\, with their doctrine of cleansing the unjust\, unfaithful and those they declare sinners sent warning after warning that the people of Juno would be next to fall to the righteousness of their belief\, sending their zealous followers to lay siege to Juno and those that came to the sinful Juno Valley Valentine’s Ball. \nA day of full chaos and bloodshed followed\, with many wounded\, dying and dead on both sides. It seemed at one point that Goodwill and Sweetwater would fall but with true grit and determination the Second Coming’s zealots were pushed back out of Juno Valley. Many now call that day “The day of bloody roses”. \nOnce the smoke and dust settled\, Mayor Jack Carson – defiant to the core – declared that Juno valley is at war with the Second Coming\, and that Juno is a place of free faith and forward thinking\, and declared that the town will be holding a Beltane Festival and Fair – on the final day of which\, the High Priestess of the Second Coming was revealed to be hiding in plain sight\, and arrested by the Law-abiding folks of the town. \n  \nIn the third arc\, the story has revolved around the coming of the railway\, technology and globalisation marking the last days of the frontier of the Old West. \nWith the Goodwill Town Council opening the brand-spanking new Community Hall with a harvest festival kicking off the celebrations\, Beulah-May and the other town stalwarts welcomed in an investor from the big city\, Mr Henry Wallington – a cattle baron by trade. \nJuno Valley has no patience for lawbreakers\, and justice is just a quickdraw away. They say better the devil you know\, but what if the villain comes to Goodwill bearing good will? And Bearer’s bonds? What if Mr Wallington’s charity has a price too high for the folks of this simple valley to be able to pay? The sticks of dynamite rigged to blow in the Screamin’ Horn Saloon may be a rather final answer to that question. \nA man with fingers in many pies and hands in many pocketbooks\, Mr Wallington’s operation was scoped out by the locals of Juno Valley by the lawkeepers as well as those with less salubrious connections. The gang he’d hired to cause trouble was taken by a posse of Pinkertons and deputies\, and a mining camp used to launder gold was ransacked for evidence of his crimes. The central body of he island under the control of the Four Clans as One – the farming Beørnings\, nomadic Augings\, seafaring Ylvings and the Refskeggings\, the traders and Kings who keep the laws\, under the watchful eyes of the Mystics – once of a clan\, now unfettered in the wake of the Gods’ will. \nIn the 22nd year of the reign of King Olaf Refskegging\, something historic happened. Peace was brokered with the Manafolk’s ancient enemy\, the Brúsingr\, once the fifth clan of their people\, led by the fifth hero who took the island and – according to the sagas – removed all of the Jotun and Trollkin from Manafell alongside Ylva\, Refskegg\, Auga and Beørn. A marriage between the King’s son Prince Thorstein and Ingrid the pragmatic daughter of King Halfdan of the Brúsingr. \nThe Jomsvikings were next – five bands of warriors led by five Jarls\, who swear oaths to no kings who cannot pay them. One\, Gríma Knothair\, was won over with piety\, another two by quiet agreements with the Manafolk. Jarls Hilda and Johan had a problem: one of their fellow Jomsviking Jarls was a troublemaker\, a nuisance\, but anything they may do to aid the succession of his much more… amenable… captain would not be looked upon well by their people. The Manafolk were able to lend a hand\, and a dagger in the dark. \nBut what of the lands to the West? The raids in the summer proved it was not merely legend. The place called North-Umbria holds many treasures – too many for them to bring home on their brief sojourn in the summer of 800AD. A plan was formed\, the ties of Manafell – the Oaths sworn – held the island\, and those with a glint in their eye sailed west. \nThere they found riches\, but also a people now steeled to attacks from the sea\, fighting back with cunning as well as brute strength. With a great steel chain spanning across the river Forth\, the Manafolk were forced to reply in kind\, using much of the Ylvings guile and wit with waterways to find the source of the chains. Kidnapping the blacksmith who forged them\, they forced her to break the great work\, and could make their way back home. \nNow the winter solstice approaches\, and Augings travelling between the Manafell settlements bring news – Elders have been going missing\, taken from their beds or places of work\, with nothing else seemingly gone. These folk have survived a year as Jarl of their people in the past\, so are not without skill their people value: strength\, fearlessness\, leadership\, wit\, cunning\, diplomacy… to say nothing of their talents with an axe\, bow or spear. \nCoupled with new reports of lights and other strange signs on the haunted isle off the Ylving coast\, it is many a person who seeks advice and charms of protection from their mystics\, fearful of wandering draugr or jealous hugr spirits dragging them to Hel’s embrace. \nAs the nights draw in\, and stories of the lights on Østaland continue\, Prince Thorstein makes plans for a new kind of raid…

They have other like-minded members wishing to end the havoc reaping through the Old Forest. \nBanditry is now running fully rampant; the Pilfering Knave with all their thieves and brigands holds much of the roads out of the Five Kingdoms to the Old Forest\, and seemingly does not care for the regards of the other Bandit Princes or deals with the Merchants Guild. The Guild pushes for more to be done but the Ba’moorian exile The Reaver makes war inside the walls of the Five Kingdoms. It is luck more than sound judgement if you manage to get to Harker’s Lodge and the Urn without seeing evidence of banditry\, be it the aftermath or facing a spear point yourself. \nBut banditry isn’t something the heroes of Harker’s lodge had in their sights; the name Leomass was spreading\, talks of his weapons coming back to the Five Kingdoms in greater numbers than ever and hushed whispers of their power growing. The dead not staying dead\, mutalited souls forced into bodies\, the Soul Sea but a trickle allowing no rest for those who fall. \nThe Heroes found a way of ripping a portal open into the Soul Sea\, ending the blight of wandering dead and dark spirits but at what cost? The central body of he island under the control of the Four Clans as One – the farming Beørnings\, nomadic Augings\, seafaring Ylvings and the Refskeggings\, the traders and Kings who keep the laws\, under the watchful eyes of the Mystics – once of a clan\, now unfettered in the wake of the Gods’ will. \nIn the 22nd year of the reign of King Olaf Refskegging\, something historic happened. Peace was brokered with the Manafolk’s ancient enemy\, the Brúsingr\, once the fifth clan of their people\, led by the fifth hero who took the island and – according to the sagas – removed all of the Jotun and Trollkin from Manafell alongside Ylva\, Refskegg\, Auga and Beørn. A marriage between the King’s son Prince Thorstein and the pragmatic daughter of King Halfdan of the Brúsingr. \nThe Jomsvikings were next – five bands of warriors led by five Jarls\, who swear oaths to no kings who cannot pay them. One\, Gríma Knothair\, was won over with piety\, another two by quiet agreements with the Manafolk. Jarls Hilda and Johan had a problem: one of their fellow Jomsviking Jarls was a troublemaker\, a nuisance\, but anything they may do to aid the succession of his much more… amenable… captain would not be looked upon well by their people. The Manafolk were able to lend a hand\, and a dagger in the dark. \nBut what of the lands to the West? The raids in the summer proved it was not merely legend. The place called North-Umbria holds many treasures – too many for them to bring home on their brief sojourn in the summer of 800AD. A plan has formed… If there is Northumbria\, what about South-Umbria? And the people known as Picts\, who were not averse to cordiality\, warrior to warrior? Perhaps there is more to be gained there too. \nThe ties of Manafell – the Oaths sworn – will hold the island\, and those with a glint in their eye will sail west.

Few of those who once sailed with him have anything to say in his defence. Impatience with in-fighting surely pushed him to seek the security of a Privateer’s Letter of Marque\, but in betrayal and death he has managed something he never managed with force of will in life alone – unity. \nThe hatchet is buried\, let the crews of the Santiana and Chariot not speak of it again. Presumably\, the crews of the Diamond\, Marengo and Devil’s Daughter give a sigh of relief as all can finally focus on what is important – treasure. \nIn the months since the pirates first took possession of the island that Blackbeard had left them\, work has been done to make it more of a base for the crews who call it home by those who elected not to throw in their allegiance with a single ship but instead take what freelance jobs the captains were willing to pay for. With the assistance of those crews who\, by lack of resources or need of refit were unable to take to the high seas this season\, there is a sense of hope on the breeze. \nAnd breeze there is. The rebellion in the north is by no means over\, but between the relative peace and treaty negotiated with Rowena of Kent and her Saxons\, fewer houses have been burned\, and storehouses plundered. \nThe Nuns of Beale have also proved to be true to their word\, providing the healing arts to members of several of the retinues of the Pendragon Court while they wait for their Abbey to be relocated. These nuns travel freely in small groups across the lands of Albion\, and with the financial support of the court have been busy setting up three smaller sister-priories where their skills can be taught. \nAll this is fine and good… but some of those who met at Conisborough in Spring are still plagued by dreams. Some nightly\, some only when in their cups\, some only very rarely\, but always the same visions they had after drinking the water of a holy well found a little north of the village. The rebel Captains of the Republic of Pirates were forced out\, or sold out and were given the King’s Pardon in exchange for hunting down their fellows. Some were hanged\, some died at their guns\, but many escaped to cooler climes and other opportunities. \n  \nA year passed\, and it became clear that they were a dying breed\, begging for scraps. The hunting grounds of the Caribbean were now the fortified trade routes of four empires\, and without a friendly port to guarantee refit\, the danger of taking on a British\, Spanish\, French or Dutch frigate was often too high to countenance. \n  \nIn 1720 the stories started to be told. A Pirate fleet could be assembled; the likes of which no Empire had ever seen. Over a hundred independent Captains working together to form a Pirate Armada to chase out the navy of King George forever\, and show the world that the Republic was not just a brief dream. Some disagreed\, but many were won over\, taking their ships and persuading their allies to follow the figureheads of the last of the Pirate Council who once ruled Nassau. In the Spring of 1721 they met\, and sailed. The Pirate Armada of the Free Republic of Nassau sailed for the first and last time\, gathering speed and numbers as it thundered along to the island it once called home. \n  \nA home where it was met by the full force of the British Navy. Over a hundred ships of all shapes and sizes from the free captains\, against sixty frigates\, a dozen Third Rate Ships-of-the-line\, four ninety-gun Second Rate Ships-of-the-line and the pride of the British Navy\, the HMS Britannia.\n\nIt was a bloody day for Pirates: great names like Calico Jack\, Charles Vane\, Benjamin Horningold\, Mary Read\, Ann Bonny – the greatest pirates of their age – either died or were captured and hanged in the newly re-established British port of Nassau by Woodes Rogers. \n\nBut not all was lost that day. During the heavy fighting\, five ships manage to escape amongst the chaos of the shot\, smoke and screams. They collected those who were left sinking by the crown as they focused on the ships still showing fight\, taking as many people on board as they could before they were claimed by Davy Jones.\n\nOne of these ships was captained by Blackbeard’s first mate – a ruthless and puritanical pirate by the name of Israel Hands – who led these five ships north for fifteen days across open seas\, avoiding any land or ships that crossed their path. On the sixteenth\, Hands’ ship\, the Santiana\, flagged to dock in the next island cove\, but the other crews looked about with alarm – there were no coves nearby on any chart they possessed. The nearest land was six days north or eleven days west\, the only thing they were likely to find in this salt-ridden waste was a slow death by becalming and the thirst that came with it. \nBut then\, out from the sea spray on the horizon a shimmer of light. Land ho! As if hidden between the sea and the sky themselves.\n\nRumours always abounded about Blackbeard’s secret island and how he escaped the Crown for so long\, and this must be Blackbeard’s final gift to the Pirate Republic. \nA place to start anew.
