‘Around our campfire, the soldiers eat and sleep and sharpen their swords. I’m worrying about our profit margin. Our contract pays 400 silver shillings for taking out these bandits, but the noble who hired us didn’t mention that we’d have to charter a boat and march for a week just to find them. Watching the miles roll by, I keep thinking the same thing: we’re going to lose money.’
Free Company is a game set in a world highly influenced by Games Workshop’s ‘Warhammer Fantasy’ setting. You play as members of a mercenary company, taking coin in return for your skill at arms in the face of the things that lurk beyond the borders of the civilised world.
The game will run over three days, from Friday Evening to Sunday Lunch, and will have optional catering by our on-site chef for those who purchase a meal ticket, who will be producing thematic and immersive meals handpicked for this game. This is not reenactment; we will not be critiquing the authenticity of your belt buckle! Costumes are aspirational, however the aesthetics of the Old World are very striking and thus should be thought of as equally important to the name and traits of the character you wish to play. While primarily a game focused around combat roleplay, there will be several plotlines aimed at non-combat players, playing into themes of intelligence-gathering and intrigue, as well as social deduction and ballgowning.
Free Company is inspired by media such as Games Workshop’s ‘Warhammer Fantasy’ and its associated video game and RPG systems, as well as the actions of mercenary companies throughout the Early Modern period. Further inspiration comes from games such as ‘Battle Brothers’.
